Study: Cards Better Than Tweets For Valentines Day

Updated: Tuesday, 09 Feb 2010, 12:18 PM EST

(MYFOX NATIONAL) – With Web sites like Twitter and Facebook becoming more popular than ever, the art of communication is disappearing faster than ever. Unfortunately for men looking to take the easy way out, a simple tweet or status update isn’t going to do it for your special-someone on Valentine’s Day.

Nowadays, most men find it easy to send a quick text, tweet, or email to their loved one in the midst of the Valentine’s Day commotion. While a romantic date may come later that evening, the initial greeting is what women often look most forward to.

According to a British study composed of 2,100 adults, women are not content with a simple online message or greeting, especially on Valentine’s Day.

The Telegraph reported that over 50 percent of women included in the survey said that they would feel disappointed if they received a text, tweet, or wall post instead of the traditional greeting card.

Furthermore, about 20 percent of men admitted to using a mobile or online greeting and 10 percent of men have done so before through email. 75 percent of the women surveyed said a romantic letter or poem would make their day.

Clearly, tradition is a big part of Valentine’s Day for women. Men, meanwhile, seem to be modernizing their mannerisms more and more each year.

"We may no longer be knights in shining armor or damsels in distress, but we still want and need romance – it is part of our emotional DNA," said Jenni Trent Hughes, a relationship expert involved with the study, to the newspaper.

Aside from insensitive compliments, lavish and expensive gifts aren’t what all women are looking for.

Teri Cettina writing on Bankrate.com added that "most women would be far more impressed by a simpler – and often less-expensive – gift that somehow touches her heart."
